Personal rights at school

BRENT SCHOOL’S MANDATORY FINGERPRINTING OF SCHOOL CHILDREN TO BE MADE ILLEGAL

The forced collection of children’s biometric data by schools is to be banned by law, thanks to intervention by Lib Dem schools minister, David Laws. The scandal of school data-bases filled with biometric data on their students was highlighted three years ago at the Capital City Academy in Brent. In order to pay for school dinners, children were apparently “frog-marched” to have their fingerprints taken and stored on the school’s database without any consultation with parents. In the end, the school was forced to apologise and delete the data, though it continued the programme with parents’ consent.

The law on this disgraceful infringement of civil liberties is now being clarified and about time, too.

Liberal Democrats have continued to be the only remaining line of defence between the people and snooping authorities. The last Labour government had an almost Stalinist approach towards the hoarding of data on citizens under the smokescreen of the war on terror. It included permanent collection of DNA data by the police, even on those who were released without charge. Sadly, the current Tory Home Secretary is proving equally willing to trample on our personal rights and freedoms with the Snoopers’ Charter.  Anyone wishing to fight this should contact Lib Dem activist and former PPC for Holborn and St Pancras, Jo Shaw, who is putting up a mighty effort in her “No To Secret Courts” campaign on Facebook and elsewhere. She is proposing a motion for Federal Conference in spring and I urge people to support it… http://www.libdemsagainstsecretcourts.org.uk/2012/12/23/new-motion-for-spring-conference-jos-post-today-on-lib-dem-voice/
